The story

Kali Tiger Reserve covers about 1,300 square kilometres of forest in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, and was known until December 2015 as the Dandeli-Anshi Tiger Reserve. It joins the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, first notified in May 1956, with Anshi National Park, carved out in 1987 and enlarged in 2002. The two were brought under Project Tiger in January 2007.

The new name points to the Kali river, which runs right through the reserve and sustains both its wildlife and the people of the district. Bengal tigers, black panthers and Indian elephants are among the animals that live here. Together with six neighbouring protected areas in Goa and Maharashtra, it forms a nearly continuous belt of protected forest of more than 2,200 square kilometres. The area is also home to a number of hydroelectric dams as well as a nuclear power plant.
