01 — The story

The story

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary spreads over a group of small islands near Kozhikode, set among mangroves, mudflats and shallow water where river and sea meet. The tides keep reshaping this estuary, which is rich in fish and crustaceans, and sandbars surface as the water drops.

In season, migratory birds arrive from far-off regions to rest and feed. Terns and gulls work the open water, sandpipers and plovers probe the mud, and stilts, curlews, whimbrels, cormorants, egrets and herons are regularly seen. Marked paths and watch points allow birdwatching without disturbance, and the fishing villages nearby keep up traditional coastal livelihoods.
