01 — The story

The story

The International Coir Museum at Kalavoor in Alappuzha district is devoted to coir, the fibre taken from coconut husks, and to the industry that grew around it in Kerala. Its exhibits follow the material from hand looms to factory production.

Demonstrations show the traditional steps used to process the fibre, and a short film explains how the coir trade developed and shaped the regional economy. A shop on site sells coir goods, including doormats, ornaments and other handicrafts. Krishnapuram Palace and the Alappuzha backwaters are within reach for those combining several stops.
