01 — The story

The story

Halasi, a village in Belagavi district, was known in early times as Palasika and served as a capital of the Kadamba dynasty founded by Mayurasharma in the 4th century, whose rule reached across parts of Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. Seven Kadamba copper plates found here point to its age, and the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara rulers later held the area.

Its best-known monument is the Bhoo Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance. The main sanctum has an image of Maha Vishnu with Suryanarayana, Mahalakshmi and Narasimha behind; the Narasimha is believed to have appeared on its own, and a Bhoo Varaha image shows the god lifting Bhoodevi. The village also has Narasimha, Suvarneshwara and Rameshwara temples. A fair is held on the full moon of Ashvin, and at Kartik Purnima the Varaha Narasimha palanquin is carried in procession to the Rameshwara temple.
