Goravanahalli Mahalakshmi Temple stands in the village of Goravanahalli, in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. Legend begins with Abbayya, a poor man whose devotion was rewarded with wealth by Sri Mahalakshmi. He turned to charity, so that his house became known as Lakshmi Nivas, and his brother Thotadappa joined him. After Abbayya died, the goddess asked Thotadappa in a dream to build her a shrine, and he did so and began to perform poojas.
The temple's later fame owes much to Kamalamma, a pious devotee who came here in 1925 and found it neglected. She settled in the village in 1952 and took up the poojas herself. Others began to arrive and queue for darshan, and over time word of mouth spread its reputation.
