The story

Golabai Sasan (also spelt Golbai Sasan) lies in Khurda district, Odisha, beside the Malaguni River on its northern side, with Chilika Lake further south. It is known for medieval temple architecture and for an ancient settlement site. Trial digs in 1991 found Chalcolithic and Iron Age layers, probably of the 2nd and 1st millennia BCE, and later excavations in 2003 and 2011 led by Prof. R. K. Mohanty of Deccan College traced the site back to the Neolithic, about 3,500 years ago.

The finds show people who grew rice and browntop millet, pulses such as mung bean, horsegram and pigeon pea, and citrus fruit, ate cattle, nilgai, chital and wild pig, made harpoons and digging sticks from bone and horn, and lived in round wooden huts with rammed-earth floors. Woodworking adzes and other finds suggest a boat-building centre, linked to the boitas of Kalinga's seafaring past. Golabai has its own railway station on the Khurda Road–Visakhapatnam line.
