Ghunsera Devi Temple in the Pithoragarh hills is thought to date from the 9th century and is linked with the Chand dynasty, whose rule saw art and worship develop side by side in Kumaon. Some of the carved shrines in the complex are older still and are traced to the Gupta period, while idols here are credited to the Khol kings of Kartikeya Pura.
The walls carry detailed stone carving and old inscriptions. Two caves within the complex contain statues and carvings from the early medieval period. Navratri is the busiest time, when rituals at the temple draw devotees from far away.
