The story

The Ganga Jadadisvarar Temple, also called the Govindaputhur Gangajatatheeswarar Temple, is a Shiva temple in the village of Govindaputtur in Ariyalur district, a village on the northern bank of the Kollidam.

The saints Appar and Sambandar, who lived in the time of the Pallava king Mahendravarman, praised its deity in their Devaram hymns, and the temple counts among the Vaippu Sthalams. The present building dates from 980 AD, when it was raised in the reign of Uttama Chola through his officer Ambalavan Paluvur Nakkan.
