The story

Built in 1855 by Louis Guerre on Puducherry's Promenade, Our Lady of Angels Church goes by several names: Kaps Koil, Dumas Church after Dumas Street, Église Notre Dame des Anges, and White Chapel. The last refers to its original finish, a blend of limestone and eggshell made to pass for white marble; the colours were altered during the 20th and 21st centuries. Its Greco-Roman design and bell tower are often compared to the basilica at Lourdes in southern France.

A statue of Mary holding the infant Jesus stands at the entrance. Inside is a tall, spacious hall lit through stained-glass windows, and an organ fitted in 1871 is still played during worship. Services are held in French, Tamil and English.
