01 — The story

The story

Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary was created in 1994 and covers about 950 sq km in the north-eastern part of Kangra district, taking in the Dhauladhar and Bara Bhangal ranges. The name joins 'dhaula', white, and 'dhar', wall. Altitudes run from 1,600 m to 4,500 m: lower slopes carry deodar, pine, oak, birch, spruce and rhododendron, while above the tree line there is bare granite and permanent snow.

Mammals include barking deer, sambar, Himalayan tahr, ibex, red fox, brown bear, leopard and the rarely seen snow leopard. Birds are plentiful, among them cheer pheasant, red junglefowl, vultures, eagles and the western tragopan, the state bird, whose numbers have been falling. Gopalpur zoo lies nearby.
