01 — The story

The story

Devprayag, a Garhwal town at about 472 m, is where the Bhagirathi, flowing from the Gangotri glaciers, joins the Alaknanda, fed by the Satopanth and Bhagirath Kharak glaciers. Below this meeting point the river is called the Ganga, and the town counts among the five Prayags of Uttarakhand. Pilgrims bathe and pray at the confluence, and many priests who serve at Badrinath trace their families here.

Above the town stands a stone temple to Rama, pyramidal in form with a white dome and gilded finial; it was damaged in the 1803 earthquake and later repaired. Other sacred spots include Brahm Kund on the Bhagirathi, Vashisht Kund on the Alaknanda, Surya Kund and Baital Kund, plus shrines to Bhairava, Durga, Vishveshvara and Bharata.
