01 — The story

The story

Devagiri hill rises 120.2 m, about 50 km from Rayagada in Odisha, close to K. Singpur. Unusually, its summit is a rectangular platform, reached by a flight of 476 steps. Perennial pools on top carry the names Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati and Bhargavi, along with Indradyumna Lake.

The hill is held sacred for the five-faced Panchamukhi Shiva Linga and the Asta Linga, eight lingas, on its top. A cave in the hill is shaped like two jaws, with a Shiva lingam enshrined where they meet, and an inscription that has not yet been deciphered points to the site's age. Buses run regularly from Rayagada to K. Singpur.
