01 — The story

The story

Ellis Memorial Church belongs to the Church of South India and stands in the CSI Compound at Dharapuram, Tamil Nadu. Rev. J. J. Ellis built it in the 19th century, and the British rebuilt it in 1893 with cathedral status, using the Neo-Gothic style then popular with British architects; another date given for his building it is 1929.

Historians count it among the important churches of British rule in India, and it draws Christians from nearby areas. It has close links with the Dr Anne Booth Mission Hospital, built mainly for the poor, whose staff have joined the congregation in services during Healing Ministry Week.
