01 — The story

The story

Christ Church stands on the Ridge in Shimla and is the town's oldest church, built in 1857; locals use its pale yellow neoclassical front as a reference point when giving directions. Col. J.T. Boileau, an architect who also worked on repairs to the Taj Mahal, was involved in the project. The tower holds a large round clock presented by Col. Dumbleton in 1860, a brass bell with a story of a British soldier who died after trying to steal it, and five smaller tubular bells.

Inside are vaulted ceilings, stone carvings, wooden pews and a pipe organ said to be the largest on the subcontinent. Five stained glass windows represent Christian virtues, and a fresco is the work of Lockwood Kipling, father of Rudyard Kipling.
