The story

Chemould Art Gallery is a commercial art gallery on Park Street in central Kolkata that has been running for around seventy years. Its logo was designed by M.F. Husain, and its rooms mix traditional subjects with contemporary Indian painting.

Works on show often draw on mythology and festivals, with images of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesh Chaturthi and Durga Puja. There are portraits of musicians such as Bismillah Khan and Girija Devi, and scenes of the ghats at Varanasi. Artists whose work has been exhibited include Paramesh Paul, Amit Bhar and Bijay Biswaal.

The gallery sells the works it displays, so it suits both collectors and visitors who simply want to look at current Indian art in the middle of the city's main shopping and dining street.
