Cavelossim Beach lies 15 km south of Margao in South Goa, at the southern end of the Salcete stretch of coast that runs from Majorda. It is bounded by the Sal River on the east and by the Arabian Sea on the west. Black lava rocks set against white sand give it its character, and it has a reputation as a quiet beach that draws many tourists. Swimming is possible, boats take visitors out to sea to watch for dolphins, and Tripadvisor ranked it fourth among Asia's beaches in 2022. Carmona Beach lies to the north and Mobor to the south.
The village behind it once had a temple to Shantadurga, which tradition links to an exiled Nayaka prince. After the Portuguese conquest its idol was taken to Kavale in Ponda, and in 1763 the family that kept it built the chapel of Santa Cruz, a parish church since 1948.
