01 — The story

The story

Buxar Fort stands on a raised artificial mound beside the Ganga, at the point where the Sone Canal meets the river. It was built in 1054 AD by King Rudra Deo, held to be a descendant of Raja Bhoj Singh. In 1764 the fort saw the Battle of Buxar, a fight won by the East India Company.

When Francis Buchanan visited in 1812, only the southern side and its bastions were still standing. He recorded an underground passage known as Patalganga that held old images and relics. Today the site consists mostly of scattered ruins, with a peepal tree around two hundred years old growing in their midst.
