Eluru Buddha Park is built around an old pond in Eluru, the city once called Helapuri and a former capital of the Vengi dynasty. Known as Gaja Vallivari Cheruvu or Gajjalavari Cheruvu, the pond goes back to the Chalukya period, when elephants came to it to drink.
A Buddha statue 74 feet tall now stands in the middle of the water. A footbridge leads out to it, with sculptures in the Amaravati tradition decorating its railings and the statue's pedestal, and a painting gallery has been set up to present the Buddha's teachings. The park was opened by Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy, the last Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh.
