01 — The story

The story

Boyakonda Gangamma Temple sits on a hilltop among rocks and thin scrub, looking out over the countryside of Chittoor district. The climb, on foot or by road, is treated as part of the worship. The shrine is small, and local accounts say it grew through the support of village communities rather than royal grants.

The presiding deity is regarded as a protector of the land by people from Chittoor and neighbouring mandals, and folk customs and seasonal rituals keep the worship going. Special offerings take place on Mondays and in auspicious months, and crowds gather for night-long prayers and processions during Maha Shivaratri and regional festivals.
