The story

The Bhavatarini Shmashanpith Kali Temple stands at Balidangri in the Panskura block of Purba Medinipur, on the Kangsabati River's eastern bank, near the village primary school. Its presiding deity is Bhavatarini, a form of Kali.

The site was once a cremation ground used by local Hindus. Around fifty years ago Bhutanath Pradhan, headmaster of the Balidangri primary school, began praying to Maa Bhavatarini here at night, later joined by Bishnu Rana, and Paran Manna then organised the place as a gathering point for religious occasions. The present temple was built in 1994. Rathyatra is celebrated here, and the temple is also used for Hindu weddings.
