01 — The story

The story

The Bay Island Driftwood Museum in Kumarakom shows sculptures made from wood washed up by the Arabian Sea. It grew out of the work of Raji Punnoose, an artist and conservationist who gathered driftwood from the shore and shaped it into figures, and it stands as a tribute to his effort to protect Kerala's natural surroundings.

More than 150 pieces are on show. Subjects range from gods and mythical beasts to portraits of ordinary people, and several works illustrate episodes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The oldest item, dating from the late 1800s, is a model of a Kerala houseboat more than 6 feet long.
