Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary lies a short drive along the coast from Puri and stretches for several kilometres beside the Bay of Bengal. Its coastal forest is made up largely of casuarina, cashew and acacia, and gives way to sand dunes, coastal marshes and mangroves where sea creatures and migrant birds breed and nest.
Spotted deer, wild boar and jungle cats live in the woods, alongside many reptiles and amphibians. Birdwatchers look for egrets, herons, kingfishers and birds of prey. The beaches of Ramachandi, Chandrabhaga and Konark fall along the sanctuary's shoreline.
