The Atharnala Bridge carries the road across the Bhargavi River at Puri. Dating from the 13th century, when the Eastern Ganga king Narasimha Deva I ruled, it served as a key route between the coastal temple town and the interior of Odisha, supporting trade and cultural contact.
The bridge is about 85 metres long and is made of stone masonry set in lime mortar. Its name means eighteen arches, matching the number of arches resting on its solid piers. It remains a well-known local landmark.
