The story

The Archaeological Museum stands in Old Goa and lays out the region's history from prehistoric times to the Portuguese period. A bronze statue of Afonso de Albuquerque greets visitors in the lobby, surrounded by old maps and pictures of buildings from Goa, Daman and Diu.

The galleries hold pieces of ancient Hindu temples, sati stones, bronze sculptures and formal portraits of Portuguese viceroys. Maps of historic sea routes cover the region's naval past, and a coin collection includes issues from Hindu, Muslim and Portuguese rulers.
