01 — The story

The story

Annandale is a broad meadow framed by tall pines, about 2 km from Shimla Railway Station and 5 km from the Ridge. From the 1830s it served British officers and their families as a recreation ground, first known as 'Company Ka Baag', hosting fancy dress events, picnics, gymkhanas, polo and cricket, along with a yearly national polo championship and military parades.

One account says officers named it after the Annandale valley in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, where many of them came from; another credits political agent Charles Pratt Kennedy, who is said to have named it after a woman he loved called Anna. The ground now has a golf course and the Army Heritage Museum, which covers battles, war heroes and the growth of the armed forces.
