The Anna Science Centre was set up by the Government of Tamil Nadu and opened on 10 June 1999 to bring science to students and the wider public. It sits on the highway from Tiruchirappalli to Pudukkottai, next to Tiruchirappalli Airport, and students from neighbouring districts such as Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Madurai are encouraged to visit.
It has a 75-seat planetarium with shows in Tamil and English. There is also a 3D theatre, an environment gallery on ecosystems, nutrient cycles, biodiversity and conservation, and a two-acre Evolution Park where models show how species developed. The centre holds regular sky-watch sessions when the public can look at celestial objects through a telescope, with extra sessions around events such as eclipses.
