The story

Andher, 19 km south-east of Sanchi, has a group of three Buddhist stupas in Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh. They stand high enough to look out over the Bhojpur stupas, with the stupas of Sanchi visible beyond. Andher is one of four groups of stupas within about 20 km of Sanchi, with Bhojpur to the south-east, Sonari to the south-west and Satdhara to the west.

Stupa No. 1, the largest, dates to about 150 BCE and keeps the remains of a stone railing, or vedika, around it. Stupas No. 2 and No. 3 yielded Brahmi inscriptions naming the same monks whose relics were found at Sanchi Stupa No. 2 and at Sonari: Vachi and Moggaliputa in No. 2, and Haritiputa in No. 3.
