01 — The story

The story

Anayirankal Dam lies about 32 km from Munnar, surrounded by tea estates and evergreen forest. It was built in the 1960s. The name joins the Malayalam words for elephant and for descending, a reference to the elephants that come down to the water, and they can still be seen at the lake along with gaur and wild boar.

The reservoir is bordered by a clear lake and wide tea plantations. Boat rides run on the water, and the plantation slopes and the banks are used for walks and picnics. Other sights in the wider Munnar area include Eravikulam National Park with Anamudi peak, the seven-step Cheeyappara Waterfall beside National Highway 49, and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary near the Tamil Nadu border.
