The story

Anasuya Ashram lies in thick forest roughly 15 to 18 km from Ram Ghat in Chitrakoot, close to where the Mandakini river rises, and is one of the four sites on the Chitrakoot Char Dham pilgrimage. It is held to be the hermitage of the sage Atri and his wife Sati Anasuya. A legend from the Valmiki Ramayana says that during a ten-year drought, Anasuya's penance brought the Mandakini down to earth, and that Rama and Sita later visited her here, where she instructed Sita and gave her clothes and jewellery that never faded.

The complex holds idols of Anasuya, Atri and their son Dattatreya, regarded as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in one form, along with sculptures showing the ashram's legends. Set apart from the crowds at Ram Ghat and Kamadgiri, it is a quieter stop on the circuit.
