01 — The story

The story

Chandrika Devi, a queen of the Eastern Ganga line, had this temple built beside Bindu Sarovar in Bhubaneswar during the 13th century, although an image of Vishnu is believed to have been worshipped on the site earlier. Under Maratha rule in the late 17th century the shrine was substantially renovated. It is counted among the oldest and best-known temples in Odisha.

Built in the Kalinga style, it has four sections: the sanctum, Jagamohana, Bhogamandapa and Natamandira. Black granite images of Krishna, Balarama under a seven-headed serpent, and Subhadra holding a pot and lotus stand in the sanctum, and the walls carry Vaishnava carvings. Its cross-shaped platform is believed to be the first in the region. Mahaprasad, or Abhada, is cooked in earthen pots and handed out to worshippers at Bhoga Bazaar close by.
