The story

Aluvamkudi Sree Mahadeva Temple is a Shiva shrine deep in the forest of the Vadasserikkara range, part of the Ranni forest division in Pathanamthitta district. Its creation is attributed to Parashurama, and a Devaprashnam, an astrological ritual, is said to have revealed that Rama once performed pujas here. According to the archaeological department, the temple is more than 2,000 years old.

For a long period the shrine lay abandoned, until a hunter came upon it in the 1940s; the first people to visit and inspect it came from Gurunathanmannu and Thekkuthode. Gurunathanmannu and Thoompakkulam are the closest settlements, and routes lead in from Pathanamthitta via Konni and Thannithodu or from Chittar. Pujas take place on the first day of each Malayalam month, and Shivaratri has been marked every year with a festival and special rites since the rediscovery.
