All Saints' Church is the oldest church in Shillong and is unusual for being built largely of wood. Lord Northbrook, then Viceroy, laid the foundation stone of the first building, which Bishop Edward Johnson of Calcutta consecrated on 18 August 1877. That church on Kacheri Road fell in the 1897 earthquake, and the present one went up in 1902 to a design by engineer and architect W. Arundel. It began under the Church of England; today it is part of the Church of North India, in its Diocese of North-East India.
The design follows Anglican Neo-Gothic lines, with pointed arches and a cross-shaped plan of nave, transepts, chancel and vestry. Stained-glass windows showing religious scenes and bells brought from Europe are among its features, and the timber is thought to be local. Tall deodars and kept gardens surround the building.
