The story

Alanduraiappar Temple is in Nallathukudi village, about 2 km from Mayiladuthurai on the road to Nedumaruthur. Appar sang of it, so it is counted among the Vaippu Sthalams. The historian R. P. Sethu Pillai gave its older names as Kuyiladuthurai and Kuyilalanthurai, though U. V. Swaminatha Iyer tied the similar name Kuyilanthurai to a temple north of Dharmapuram. The temple was consecrated on 8 June 1970.

At Mayiladuthurai and Mylapore the goddess is said to have worshipped Shiva as a peahen; here she did so as a koel, which is why she is called Kuyiladu Nayaki and Kuyilanda Nayaki. Surya also worshipped here, and a bath in the Surya Pushkarani is believed to rid people of long illnesses. There is no gopuram and only one entrance, with Nandi and the bali peetham before the west-facing shrine. The prakaram holds shrines to the Navagrahas, Bhairava, Shani and Dakshinamurthy, and the temple tree is the vilva.
