01 — The story

The story

Opened on 26 November 2006, Aizawl Zoological Park lies about 14 km from the state capital and spreads over 18.75 hectares. More than 150 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians live in enclosures shaped to resemble their wild surroundings, with separate areas for carnivores, herbivores and primates as well as reptile houses. The cats include Bengal tigers, clouded leopards and snow leopards, while Asiatic elephants, Indian rhinoceros, sambar, hornbills, eagles and parakeets also feature.

A botanical garden displays plants native to the region, and a walk-in aviary lets visitors see birds at close range. A small train circles the grounds, guides lead tours on animal behaviour and conservation, and a petting area holds rabbits, guinea pigs and birds. The zoo also runs conservation workshops and summer camps for children.
