The story

Agori Fort stands beside the Son River near Obra, about 10 km from Chopan in Sonbhadra district. Rivers enclose it on three sides, the Bijul, the Rihand and the Son, and trenches were dug all round it for defence. In 1187 Raja Bhram Jit, a son of the Chandela king Parmardi Deva, overcame the local Khairwar chief and took the area; his son Parimal later ruled Agori independently, and the fort stayed the seat of the Chandel rajas of Agori Barhar. A Persian inscription of 1616 survives in one part, and the estate came under Mughal rule in 1620.

Today the fort is also a place of worship, with a Kali temple and an idol of Goddess Durga at the courtyard entrance, and it is linked with Agori Baba. Local lore holds that King Molagt fought Veer Lorik here, and an elephant-shaped stone in the river is said to be the king's elephant slain by Lorik. Access is by boat from Chopan.
