The story

The Adi Chitragupta Temple, also called Kayastha Dham, stands near Naujar Ghat in Patna. It honours Chitragupta, the deity believed to record every person's good and bad deeds and to decide their passage after death; the Kayastha community regards him as its chief god. Tradition says Mudrarakshasa, a statesman of the Nanda dynasty, began communal worship here more than 2,500 years ago.

Ganga floods damaged the complex over the centuries. Raja Todarmal, finance minister to Akbar, later restored it and had a black stone idol of the deity installed. In 1766 Maharaj Bhupnarayan Singh, grandson of Raja Sitaab Rai, added carved stonework. Kayastha devotees gather here every year on Yamdwitiya.
