Adi Annamalaiyar Temple stands in Adi Annamalai, on the girivalam route of the Tiruvannamalai temple. It is also called Ani Annamalai, and it predates the big Annamalaiyar (Arunachaleshwar) temple in Tiruvannamalai.
As in the larger temple, its lingam is held to be swayambhu, or self-manifested. Shiva is worshipped here as Adi Annamalaiyar or Adi Arunachalesvarar and the goddess as Adi Abithakujalambal. The temple is one of the Vaippu Sthalams named in the hymns of the Saivite saint Appar.
