The story

Abhimukeswarar Temple, also spelt Abimukeswarar, is a Hindu temple to Shiva beside the Mahamaham tank in Kumbakonam, on its east side, Thanjavur district. It is put at between 500 and 1,000 years old, and it is one of twelve Shiva shrines tied to the Mahamaham festival, which comes round in Kumbakonam once every twelve years.

Shiva is worshipped here as Abimukeswarar, a name explained by the story that he turned around to face the nava kanniyar, the nine river goddesses, when they arrived, so as to grant them darshan. His consort Parvati is called Amirthavalli, and the temple tree is the gooseberry. In the Navagraha shrine, the figure of Sani stands taller than the other eight planets. The temple was reconsecrated on 26 October 2015.
